About

Hi, welcome to Hipster Cafe Cambodia! This blog was created by me, Zita Long, a Cambodian-Canadian and former cafe owner-operator, with a professional background in sourdough baking.

Hipster Cafe Cambodia is a satire-ish business consultancy website, poking fun of trendy cafes and restaurants in Cambodia, its owners, customers and everybody affiliated with it. The two main objectives of my blog are:

  • to entertain readers, especially cafe and restaurant owner-operators in Cambodia;
  • to inspire insight through lighthearted mockery and criticism of this niche industry

In 2016 my business partner and I founded a bakery-cafe called ‘Bang Bang’ in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Our bakery-cafe survived for 6 years, ultimately closing in 2022 because of the economic recession led by the Covid-19 pandemic. During the lifespan of Bang Bang, some critics described our bakery-cafe as ‘hipster’, presumably as an insult. I’m still not sure what ‘hipster’ is but I embrace its ambiguity, loosely defining it in my blog as: trying to be different but becoming the same as many others.

In other words, different different but same.
